The 4 Dimensions of the Heart

In the groundbreaking book Energize your Heart in 4 Dimensions, by Puran and Susanna Bair (2007), they describe and energetic emotional model of the heart. The heart’s four dimensions are vertical (height and depth), horizontal (width left and right), Forward (and backward), and Inner.

4 Dimensions of the Heart

Each dimension is present in all of us to some degree or another. One dimension is always stronger in a person. The dimensions of heart can be seen in other people.

For instance, a person with a wide heart embraces all people and things. They accept diversity and are able to work with a wide variety of people with ease.

Someone with great depth of heart is able to feel deeply and connects with people at an emotional level.   A person with a well-developed height of heart has high ideals, is optimistic, able to see the forest from above the trees.

One with a strong forward dimension has great energy and drive. She has focus and determination. This person sets and accomplishes goals.

The inner dimension can be seen in people as the capacity for growth and expansion in any of the directions. The inner dimension represents the essence of all beings, around us and within us. It is full of joy.

Energize Your Heart in 4 Dimensions

In Heart Rhythm Meditation we do practices which develop these dimensions through breath and focus on our hearts.

Heart Rhythm Meditation is easy to learn and effective. The way Heart
Rhythm Meditation works is by creating a rhythm between your heartbeat
and your breath, for example, 8 beats in, 8 beats out. It’s simple, and it takes only a bit of practice to master.

By listening to your heartbeat, you strengthen your heart. By harmonizing your breath and heartbeat, you create a powerful rhythm in your body that strengthens your heart by creating something called entrainment in the variability of your heart rate.

You can check your own dimensions of heart by answering the Heart Index questionnaire developed by the Institute for Applied Meditation.

The Heart Index is a way to describe the condition of a human heart. The questionnaire will accurately indicate your Heart Index, giving you information you can use to guide your heart development.

After you answer the questionnaire, our computer will score your responses and email you your Heart Index: a representation of the dimensions of your heart. Some advice for the continued development of the dimensions of your heart will also be offered. It is about 65 multiple choice questions that you answer without thinking too hard or long. It is easy and interesting to take.

It is useful to track your Heart Index over time. Some of the dimensions of your heart may expand while others shrink. Keeping the heart open and growing requires constant attention to it.
